Following the earthquake recorded in Colombia, Oxfam Colombia continues to closely monitor the situation and the conditions faced by affected communities, with particular attention to the territories of Chocó and Buenaventura.
As part of the emergency response, Oxfam Colombia remains in communication with local partner and allied organizations, which have in-depth knowledge of the communities, their dynamics, and their capacities. Through this joint effort, information is being gathered on potential damage and the humanitarian needs faced by communities.
For Oxfam Colombia, local organizations are key actors in any humanitarian response. Their knowledge of the territory makes it possible to identify needs, gain a more accurate understanding of the impacts of an emergency, and help ensure that response actions are relevant, timely, and aligned with community priorities.
“In an emergency, responding does not simply mean acting quickly; above all, it means listening to those who are experiencing the situation and recognizing the knowledge of organizations that have historically supported and accompanied their communities. That is why we are working closely with partner and allied organizations in Chocó and Buenaventura to understand needs and potential gaps in the response, placing the voices and priorities of communities at the center,” said María Rodríguez, Oxfam Colombia’s Project Coordinator.

Together with its partner and allied organizations, Oxfam Colombia is incorporating an intersectional approach that recognizes that emergencies do not affect everyone in the same way. This process seeks to help ensure that any actions undertaken respond to the realities, capacities, and priorities of communities, with particular attention to existing inequalities and pre-existing vulnerabilities that may be exacerbated during an emergency.
Oxfam Colombia expresses its solidarity with the individuals, families, and communities currently facing the consequences of this emergency and will continue to monitor the situation in the affected territories alongside local organizations.
